Tips for preserving the aroma and taste of cannabis

Even if the outdoor season for your Afghan plants is not yet ripe in 2024, we would like to provide you with this article. Of course, preserving the aromas applies both outdoors and indoors.

Cannabis is known for its diverse aroma and flavor profiles, ranging from fruity and sweet to earthy and spicy. To ensure you enjoy the full sensory potential of your cannabis flowers, it is important to carefully preserve the aroma and flavor. Here are some tried and tested tips to maximize the quality of your cannabis:

1. Proper storage

Temperature control: Store cannabis in a cool, dark place, ideally at a temperature between 15-21°C. Heat can break down the terpenes responsible for aroma and flavor.

Humidity: Keep the relative humidity between 59-63%. Conditions that are too dry can make the flowers brittle and lose their aroma, while conditions that are too humid can encourage mold growth.

Light protection: Avoid direct sunlight as UV rays can break down the cannabinoids and terpenes. Dark, airtight containers are ideal.

2. Use of glass containers

Glass over plastic: Glass containers are preferable as plastic containers can release chemicals and affect the flavor. Make sure the containers are airtight.

Vacuum sealing: If possible, use vacuum sealed containers to minimize the amount of air inside and slow down oxidation.

3. Gentle handling

Avoid over-handling: Excessive touching and crushing of the flowers can damage the trichomes, where the terpenes and cannabinoids are concentrated. Use scissors or a grinder to chop up the flowers.

Trim carefully: When trimming, be careful not to damage the buds too much. Remove excess leaves, but be careful not to break off the trichomes.

4. Proper drying and curing

Slow drying: Dry the flowers slowly over 7-14 days at a temperature of about 18-21°C and a humidity of 45-55%. Drying too quickly can affect the aroma and taste.

Curing: After drying, the flowers should be cured in airtight containers for at least 2-4 weeks. This allows further development of the aromas and improvement of the taste.

5. Avoid strong smells and aromas

Store cannabis separately: Do not store cannabis near strong smelling substances such as spices, coffee or perfumes. Cannabis can absorb these smells, affecting the natural aroma.

6. Regular inspection

Quality control: Check your supplies regularly for signs of mold or other problems. Remove infected flowers immediately to protect the rest of the harvest.
